We Sifted through a bucket load of amazing tracks submitted to Songdew by artists for a chance to win a feature on Melody Insider. Ishaan Nigam is one such artist who’s track stood out for what is undoubtedly a meritorious one. And since the track is what made Ishaan Nigam one of the winners, we bring forth this interview which talks about, among other things, the very track that got him here.

Congratulations on being selected as Winner of the Songdew contest. Tell us about the song that you submitted.

Thank you. I submitted my recent release O Chaand (Reprise). The song is all about appreciating the beauty and mystics of the moon. The song has a melancholic yet romantic vibe. The song has been beautifully penned down and composed by Brite Roy. The major challenge while singing this composition was to do justice with the composition and lyrics as it doesn’t have a particular emotion in common. It will make you feel the way you want to feel it.

How did you come to know about Songdew and the contest?

I have been following SongDew since 2017 and really appreciate its initiative to help indie artists showcase their work. Melody Insider is one such unbiased platform which supports good music.

If you were to introduce your music and genre to someone unaware of your music, how would you?

One good thing about my music is that I don’t bind myself in a trap of genre. I try to explore as much as I can. Some of my songs are indie electronic folk, some are indie pop, some are reggae, some are purely indie.

How long have you been producing?

I have been releasing music independently since 2019 and have released 7 singles till date. I started my career as a singer in April 2011 as a YouTuber and started uploading covers since then. I started singing at the age of 7 and gave my first stage performance at the age of 10. The journey till now is beautiful and full of new learnings everyday.

One artist you’d like to collaborate with, but you know it’s not the right time now.

I’d love to collaborate with Jasleen Royal because I totally love her work and the personality she carries.

According to you, what does it take to earn the acclaimed badge of “Established Artist”?

When an artist has earned a loyal fanbase and gets regular shows and work. This costs sleepless nights, inner battles, self-doubts, regular practice towards improving our craft, requesting people to at least listen to our music at least once.

How has your place of Origin been an influence on your music?

I come from a very small city called Bahraich (Near Lucknow), UP where there is no scope to do professional music or at a higher level. I got influenced during my school days since I have grown up listening to radio to the legends like Mohd. Rafi, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and they have been constant inspiration to pursue good music. About local support, when I started getting recognised on YouTube, Instagram only then people from my town started recognising me because in their opinion if anyone has not sung in films, one is not a “Established Artist”.

An artist whose music according to you is attracting international attention which is going to propel the industry’s growth.

Talking about indie artists, I feel Armaan Malik and Prateek Kuhhad are blowing up the scene really well.

If we speak to you again exactly this date 5 years from now, How different are all the above answers going to be?

Hopefully, way too different.

Well, thank you once again for spending time with us, giving us valuable insight into your career. We wish you all the very best of luck in your endeavors. See you soon at a Concert.
