DJ Wish, An engineer by education is a Chennai native who has created memorable experiences as the newest generation of open format DJs. His capability to take control of any room has opened opportunities and has paved the way for his musical talents to become popular trends. DJ Wish believes in musical journey. The belief that the night should always tell a story through the highs and lows of song selection. Through his experience as a DJ, Wish says knowing what songs to play is his biggest advantage.

What music are you producing or DJ'ing

I come from a Hip hop background. When it comes to Dj'ing, the production is related to Moombahton and Trap. So right now, I’m making the shift of focusing on these genres for DJ'ing as well.

What got you into this genre?

I’m a huge fan of Reggae and Dancehall music. The concept of combining reggae/dancehall/reggaeton percussion with electronic elements swiftly caught my attention towards Moombhaton. Similarly with Trap, Loud kicks, triplet hi hats, snappy snares and low end 808 bass samples is used with Rap vocals is what got me into Trap.

How has the struggle been so far to your current stand?

Following arts as your profession is never an easy bargain. Isn’t it? Being a DJ from South India, Chennai to be in particular is never easy. But I was fortunate to get the right opportunities at the right period in my career. Things have been really better in the past 3 years with a busy touring calendar.

Not necessarily monetary, how have the rewards been so far in this career?

First of all you get to be your own boss. The joy of seeing people get a kick out of your music really is something else. As a DJ, it’s basically your job to do exactly that. The happier you make them, the more likely you are to succeed.

Why did you choose this career?

I will say that this happened fortuitously. I had to play some music in my University's fest. And this Later had me very intrigued to learn DJing professionally.

And how is the support from industry peer's?

The support has been pretty appreciable, but honestly,  it can be better. I’m fortunate to be working along with few like minded people who believe in sticking around and growing together as colleagues and as friends.

Who is your inspiration?

Rahul Dravid - I have always looked up to him for inspiration at many stages as I was growing up and I’m glad to be from an era where Rahul Dravid played cricket for India. Played with definite heart, passion & sincerity. Faced several failures, yet never stopped trying to improvise.

What is your methodology behind a set you play when you open for artists at clubs?

The Opening set is an art in itself. I was a resident DJ during the establishing stages of my DJing and was well versed with warm up sets. I run through the artist’s sets in Soundcloud or Youtube (in case if I don’t know much about them) and also their productions. I try to understand their vibe.

Your biggest opening act so far?

Eskei83 (Red bull 3style world champion), Delta Heavy.

What’s coming up for You down the road?

I have plans to add a couple of more radio shows apart from the ones I’m running right now in Mixcloud. Also thinking of doing weekly livestreams until the scene gets better.

As an upcoming artist with tough competition, what struggles and challenges do you face?

This is quite a complicated market. Standing out from the masses and making your DJ Brand unique is the key I believe. The best way to achieve this is through your own style of music. Be different visually, characteristically and through delivery of your DJ sets.
