You are hit by considerable force of magnanimity as the first chord is strung, punctuated by such cathartic vocals. Vishal J. Singh‘s new release is superlative.

Jamunar Nila Joley is an ancient Brajavali folk song about finding God in the turbulent blue waters of river Yamuna. Vishal’s accomplishment with this moving interpretation is finding a natural harmony between the vastly differing forms of traditional folk and contemporary world music. The depth of the track is further enhanced by the cathartic vocals of Kasturi Nath Singh (Vishal’s mother), while also featuring vocals from the versatile Siddharth Basrur. Ajay Jayanthi on the violin and Andrey Sazonov on woodwinds bring have added the dimensions to the track that are quite unexampled.
This track is an attempt by a very diverse group of contemporary musicians to connect to their roots. Here is a song where five artists from contrasting backgrounds have poured out their hearts in delivering a work of beauty that almost seems effortless.
“Jamunar Nila Joley“ is out now on all major streaming platforms, hence it is pretty much going to be a convenient swipe left or right for you listeners to begin the mass consumption. Also conveniently leaving embedded above.
